UPDATE: Debris Catches Fire at Demolition Site
The debris of the demolished building on Chrysler Road off Speen Street caught fire Monday.
The debris of the demolished building on Chryster Road near Home Depot caught fire just before noon Monday.
According to deputy fire chief Michael Slattery, the cause of the fire is unknown, but it could have occurred when the excavator on site struck the surface of debris, causing a spark. Insulation and rubber roofing material caught fire, causing the thick black smoke seen from the area.
Several trucks responded to the scene and the fire was extinguished in about 20 minutes, said Slattery.
