Nonprofits Provide Healthy Meals for Ovarian Cancer Patients

Ovations for the Cure of Ovarian Cancer in Natick and Healthy Habits Kitchen have teamed up to provide healthy meals for current and recovering Ovarian Cancer patients.

Two local nonprofit organizations have teamed up to provide healthy meals for current and recovering Ovarian Cancer patients and their families, who may struggle to prepare regular healthy meals vital to the recovery process.

Natick nonprofit Ovations for the Cure of Ovarian Cancer and Healthy Habits Kitchen of Wellesley began the Ovations Helping Hands program in March with the sponsorship of the biotechnology company, Julie Fund For Women’s Cancers in Wellesley and Morphotek. Each month, eight families receive eight prepared meal kits with one side dish, which can be frozen and saved for a later day.

Each kit contains all the necessary items to prepare a healthy meal in 30 minutes or less. The ingredients are local and include chopped vegetables, fruits, a protein, sauce and spices, with directions on how to prepare each kit. Patients can enjoy dishes like grilled grouper with lime-basil pistou, pork Diane, shrimp Putanesca with wheat pasta or walnut crusted chicken with apple chutney.

“To be able to come home after a long day of Chemo and give myself, as well as my family, a healthy meal has been fantastic,” said one participant in a statement. She is the mother of an 11 and 14-year-old and is experiencing ovarian cancer for the second time. “I feel good about the fact that I am taking care of myself by eating properly and am stronger to be able to fight this disease.”

Participation in the program is free. To apply to the program, visit the Helping Hands website.
