Oh My: Poor Common Sense Shown in Foot Snafu, Knife-Wielding
We compile the odd, unusual, and 'oh, my gosh' police reports from around the region.
This week's selection of odd or quirky police news includes a tidbit about a woman running over an officer's foot, a man chastised for showing poor common sense when he waved a knife in a pharmacy, and vandals who used scooters as getaway vehicles.
She has the Police Department on speed dial.
One Milford woman called police about a dozen times this week, both from her apartment and the mental hospital in which authorities requested she be placed. One call highlighted in dispatcher notes involved her reporting two seemingly unrelated facts: 1) she was getting evicted and 2) she had to go get her tooth extracted.
Warning, bad political joke ahead:
A Holliston resident reported this week that $20 in change was taken from his car overnight, as well as a sign supporting Elizabeth Warren, U.S. Sen. Scott Brown's Democratic rival. While one might assume a Brown supporter was responsible for taking the sign, I'd argue that the change thief had to be someone else: the Republicans want you to keep your money.
This Milford officer spoke the truth...
...when he noted that a man who allegedly waved around a knife in a Milford pharmacy showed "poor common sense."
Similarly, this driver wasn't firing on all cylinders (but her car was), when she ran over an officer's foot.
Marlborough police responded to a reported domestic disturbance and found the woman, agitated, inside her car. They started talking to her and she accelerated, running over a cop's foot with one of her rear tires. (The cop wasn't seriously injured.)
Rule number one in villain training: don't be seen.
Presumably Shrewsbury police have a pretty good lead on who egged a house in town this week. A resident called them last weekend reporting seeing the suspects leave on scooters.
And, the juvenile-prank-of-the-week-award goes to:
..whoever tipped over some Port-a-potties at UMass's University campus.

Military spending under Bush, anyone? It doesn't really work as a joke. And the usual Milford bias. Why not surprise us once in a while with a slightly less predictable, less provincial, less conservative slant? (And I think you've made a real mistake in using Elizabeth Warren as your accessory here: she's shown more fiscal savvy, and a far greater interest in helping regular people understand and hold onto their money, than any recent Commonwealth candidates I know of.)

Why do so many people make that comment, "If you don't like what I write, you don't have to read it"? That seems so strange to me. I read things because I like to find out about things--I like to find out what people think and have to say. How, then, can I know that I don't like something UNTIL I read it? And with reference to what you call your "bad" joke, I wouldn't (and didn't) call it that. I just said that for me it isn't a joke. Isn't that a valid comment? Even funnier, I suppose, is that I tried to delete my post a few minutes after I made it, because I believed it might have seemed a bit harsh, and I am very much in favor of self-editing (and if I thought I was making a bad joke, that would be something I might edit out). But I wasn't able to delete the comment because it said "Pending Approval"--it said that for three hours, by which time, and after having read the article and comments again, I decided that I stood by my post. It really WOULD be nice to see a little balance on the Milford Patch (the actual nature of which I am still trying to figure out. I have been told in no uncertain terms that it is NOT a blog, but a venue for objective news...). So why not make a joke, bad or otherwise, that goes the other way--that jabs at the conservative majority in this area? Can't you treat Warren fairly AND humorously? That's all I'm saying.

Hi, David - sorry your comment got caught up in "pending." The settings on this column allowed for automatic approval, but apparently, they didn't save. Apologies. All good points. My response to your comment was rather provincial, itself, and reflects the little sleep I've gotten lately! The OMG PD column is written tongue-in-cheek and I select the "opinion" category to reflect that. We have a balance on Milford Patch and the other Patch sites in the area - news, opinion, blogs, etc. A round-up of quirky police news isn't meant to do anything other than entertain. But, you never can please everyone...

You see--that's what I really like about The Patch, and especially the Comments area: in the midst of more or less engaging, or irritating, or frivolous or deeply-felt conversations (and I know that I myself am capable--and guilty--of being all those things, too), Danielle or Mary or Susan will come along and illustrate calmly the beautiful possibility of explaining oneself clearly. So this will be my sycophant reply to your gracious one, Danielle: thanks for explaining yourself. And though I have had my share of mortifications from The Patch, I like it too much to disconnect; I learn from it and it definitely helps to focus my interests and attitudes and even, I hope, improves my mind and manners.
But enough of this. As for Ray's inexplicable declaration, below, that "Warren has no business in political office", well, Warren, and I and a lot of other people strongly disagree! As far as Brown not being conservative, as I've said before, I find Brown likable and intelligent in many ways, but I think Warren is smarter and has a great record of using her financial brains and skills to help working people protect themselves from the mysterious maneuverings of the large financial organizations which, whether or not we know it or like it, affect us all.
