Welcome back, Patch Blogger!

POLL: After the Conventions: Who Will Win the Presidential Election, Obama or Romney?

Now that the Democratic and Republican delegates have officially chosen their nominees, Patch wants to know: Who are you betting on?

And it is now official: With President Barack Obama's acceptance speech in Charlotte Thursday night, both the Republicans and Democrats have formally chosen their nominees for the 2012 presidential election. Let the real race begin.

A lot can change between now and Nov. 6: gaffes, scandals or even major international news events could shift the dynamics of the campaign.

The latest Gallup Polls show registered voters preferring President Obama to Republican nominee Mitt Romney by just one percentage point, 47 percent to 46 percent. A USA Today/Gallup poll taken just before the party conventions found American voters think the president is more likeable, but trust Mr. Romney more to handle the economy.

Pundits have been busy for months handicapping the candidates on various factors: incumbent advantage, fundraising clout, even religion.

Patch wants to know: Regardless of who you support for president, who do you think will actually claim victory in November?

Vote in our poll below, and let us know your reasoning in the comments.

  • Who will win the presidential election?

(Voting has been closed for this question)
    • Mitt Romney
        37 (50%)
    • Barack Obama
        35 (47%)
    • I don't know
        1 (1%)
    Total votes: 73

I tend to agree that both major parties work for corporate America first, but then the next president may get to pick a Supreme Court Justice. I think that depending on your social values there is a choice in that regard. People who care about their social issues will be voting, so it is best to go out and stand up for yours at the polling place, even if the rich will still win.

As much as I support Mitt Romney...I think Mr. Obama still has an edge. Of course he wouldn't if most people actually paid attention to the real issues facing this country. Too bad for Mr. Obama that today's jobs report was so bleak. Imagine, unemployment went down because people gave up looking for work! The reported number for unemployment is 8.1%, which even if you believe it, is 43 straight months with it being 8% or higher. (Worst since The Depression!)
The best speech given at either of the Conventions was by Bill Clinton. And no matter his personal shortcomings, he proved once and for all that he understands most of the issues that face we Americans. Maybe Barack should somehow try and find a place in his cabinet for this man. (Cue all the Cabinet? He'd be better in the bedroom jokes) Mr. Obama, in your next term (Which I really hope you don't get,but I'm resigned you probably will) please remember the Republican line you quoted last night..."Take 2 Tax cuts and some deregulation and call me in the morning". That's actually not bad advice sir! I'm an American first and a Republican second, I just want the man that will fix this for the people that are hurting. But to also go after the people that continuously bleed the system dry, and not helping themselves!

Dave -

The difficulty here is the assumption that people who do not support Romney (and I surely do not) are not paying attention to the "real" issues facing this country. I sure am - more than most - and I believe that President Obama has a much better plan to address them than does Romney. History bears out liberalism as more successful than conservatism.

However, when you claim that you have the only legitimate viewpoint - which you do when you assert that those who disagree must no tbe paying attention - you prevent debate, disagreement, and consensus-building.

I would like to know what Ben thinks are the "real" issues facing our country???? You must still have your job and still earn a paycheck...I think that the 37 million people without jobs is a pretty big issue. Handing out welfare checks and food stamps aren't putting people back to work. And the government stimulus jobs under Obama's leadership went to keeping his wealthy "pay back" buddies employed and making them wealthier.....I have to agree with Dave on this one...Obama supporters are not paying attention to the "real" issues facing this country. So far the only thing the Obama campaign has been talking about is free contraceptives and free abortions. Obama wants to save the planet and Romney wants to save the people!

At least 80% of the Democratic Convention revolved around contraceptives and "reproduction rights" (the democratic politically correct word for abortion)....62% of our Federal Spending under Obama's leadership goes to entitlements....if Obama wins maybe we will get an entitlement for botox treatments and hair replacement!!!! Do you think that the top priority of a Presidential candidate should be abortion, gay rights and gay-marriage with millions of people losing jobs and a deficit that has exceeded $16 trillion dollars? To pay the deficit off right now would cost $136,000 per household and if Obama is re-elected the deficit is predicted to reach $20 trillion...our kids, our grandkids and our greatkids will be strapped with this for years!

Where was W at the RNC? Why wasn't he there? Perhaps because it would remind people of terrible policies, an unnecessary war, and the worst security failure in our nation's history.

Eric, google subprime mortgages and see when they started (under Clinton), yes Bush deserves some blame bc he didn't do anything to stop them. Those mortgages caused the financial crisis and the housing bubble to burst. Unnecessary war? Ok who voted to go into Iraq? Barack Obama and our beloved Senator Kerry (sarcasim), Worst Security failure? Clinton failed to take out Bin Laden when he had the chance. 9/11 could have been stopped if he had. Why don't you fact check Obama..... He said if stimulus was passed unemployment would top out at 8% in the summer of '09 and we according to democrats unemployment would be at 5.4% at this point in his presidency. Fact, 96.000 people joined the workforce and Unemployment fell from 8.3 to 8.1 but not because of the number of jobs created but because 350,000 people stopped looking for a job. Fact, information obtained in the Bush presidency helped locate Bin Laden... who says waterboarding doesnt work? Fact Obama promised to cut the debt in half.... He in fact has racked up more debt in 3.5 years than Bush did in 8. Fact, the democrats took god and Jerusalem out of their platform and when it was reinstated even without a majority vote they booed... Fact, Obama has been a complete failure. Mitt Romney however has not... Saved the Olympics, Created thousands of jobs, yes some couldnt be saved but that is capitalism. Fact 4.3 unemployment as governor, best schools in the country, budget surplus and he worked across the isle.

Cheap shot on the last point Eric. The Democrats are worried...and that gives me hope. Nice job Mr. Obama, in supervising the worst period of employment since the Depression. Imean talk about failed policy. And Eric...didnt write that article. An independant organization did. If you want to fact check Romney/Ryan then go ahead. I make no excuses that some of their attacks on Mr. Obama are probably misleading.

Dover/Sherborn are very affluent Republican towns so I would expect Romney to "win" this poll. Democrats are the only hope for our country if we want to be non-elitist, have a safe environment, value women and diversity and have a strong economy and middle class. Repugs only care about rich white men and big business. By their terrorist, uncooperative tactics, Repugs have tried to ruin the country over the last 4 years so they could blame it on Obama and get rid of him. It is amazing to me that anyone can be so uninformed that they blame the President for today's economy when it tanked under Bush and the Repugs have done all they can to keep it that way. Even at that, it is headed in the right direction now.

Repugs?!?! Yes, let's resort to name calling, that always helps. This poll is cross posted, appeared in Milford Patch and others- so it is not skewed. (not scientific but not skewed) Economy is headed in the right direction? It is stagnant... not going anywhere.
The Democrats had a majority in the House and Senate from Jan 2007 until 2 years into the President's current term. What was accomplished? Unemployment rose to 10% in Oct 2009 and stayed above 9% all of 2010- not the change we were looking for.
And when the electorate voice displeasure by voting in a Republican Congress and taking back several Senate seats did the President take the hint like Clinton did after his mid term elections and and turn things around? Not that I can see- Obama just continued with the blame game.

"By their terrorist, uncooperative tactics" Really? Republicans are terrorists? An extreme statement in the least. One that is inappropriate and out of line.
"a safe environment, value women" .. please, remind me again who made the nominating speech at the DNC (and a good one at that)? Yes, that would be President Clinton- a man who has a very interesting outlook on the value of women.

You have got to be kidding about Clinton who values woman....He was disbarred during his presidential term for sexual harassment..had an illicit affair with Monica Lewinsky while at the White House and was fined $25,000 for perjury...And you should do some fact checking, Clinton's speech contained a lot of inacurate and misleading information. As far as a terrorist is concerned, you should go see the documentary movied "2016"...now that is pretty scarey.

I couldn't agree more...Because our economy has failed and is continuing to fail badly under Obama's leadership...Obama is trying to move voters away from focusing on the core issue of economics...In 2008 Obama blamed Bush for a bad economy and told Americans that he could fix it. These are Obama's words 3 1/2 years ago, "If I can't fix it then I should not be re-elected in 4 years"...He has not fixed it and is not qualified nor capable...politicians are either academia or attorneys,...Our country needs a business person with sound business experience...not someone who is all talk and no action. I would like to ask everyone this. If you were starting up a business of your own with your own hard earned savings, who would you hire to run the company Obama or Romney!

I truly hope that Romney wins the election. I believe that he will work very hard with both Dems and Republicans to solve our economic problems. I think Romney realizes that if elected he will represent the entire country not just his party. Obama is incompetent and to cover his incompetancy he blames the former presidents for his problems. Obama fought for this job. he knew what the problems were. He was hired to solve them. Every president takes on the problems of the prior president.. Look at the mess Romney will have to clean up.
Obama brought his crooked and aggressive Chicago politics with him. He has financially rewarded his friends and contributors with our tax money. He is trying to buy votes with his welfare give aways. he is always ready to stick by his black brotherhood people who strong armed voters and he immediately stuck by that obnoxious black Boston professor. There is definite racism but it is he who is practicing it.
We have to elect Romney. We need someone who understands work, has accomplished something on his own, knows hard decisions have to be made and who actually believes in the equality of all and will not constantly play either the race card or golf..

Obama has formed a cult of hateful people over these past four years and it is very scarey to think of what could happen with another four years. Approximately 80% of our country are people who believe in God. The other 20% are atheists and hateful people. Right now with the polls in the vicinity of Obama and Romney being tied...44% of the people supporting Obama are atheist...(We saw this at the DNC with their decision to omit "God" and "Jerusalem" from their platform then when they were pressured to reverse this decision it brought boo's from over 1/2 the delegates...what a disgrace and insult on the American people)...Are these the people that we want running our country and influencing young people? Obama is linked to George Soros, Jeremiah Wright and a whole list of terrorist thinking people....it is time for America to wake up. Obama will ruin our country both economically and morally.

Cheryl, I dare you to do your own math.

Obama is leading in all polls. Yet, you say that only 20% of people in this country are "ahteists and hateful people" (also, notice how hatefully you said that? Hmmmm...). You also say "44%" of Obama supporters are atheists.

So, if 44% of his supporters are atheists, and only 20% of the population (or is it 10? Half atheist/half hateful people?) are atheists, how is he possibly winning in the polls.

You need to stop spouting made-up bunk.

Ben,
Clearly you are a strong liberal and have every right to support Obama's liberal direction of creating an entitlement society...The freedom of choice is what makes America a great place...Perhaps you did not watch the Democratic Convention with the chaos over the decision to reverse their platform from excluding "God" and "Jerusalem".....it took 3 votes and even after 3 votes and a very clear 50/50 vote they went ahead and declared a 2/3 vote....so you are correct, my math was wrong....50% of Obama supporters are hateful atheists with no respect for God loving people in our country nor the Jews who believe that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel....Todays polls are 48% Obama and 45% Romney. You never did respond to my question of what you think are the real issues our country faces....I see 37 million people out of work and a skyrocketing deficit as real issues but if you still have a job those issues might not be of concern to you.

If Mitt were to win I believe he would care on most of the policies of the Obama Administration as most presidents care on the policies of the previous president. Under a Romney Admin. most of the social issues would probably not be addressed by Pres. Romney much in the same way that the Reagan Admin. avoided action on abortion, school prayer, balance budget amendment, etc. However, I would prefer that Mitt Romney not appoint judges to the Supreme Court. Also, I would say that Mitt is a little too gaffe prone. But I have to give credit to Mitt's ability to flexible on nearly every issue. He apparently is now against tax cuts for the rich which I assume means that the super rich may still get a tax break, but who knows. I would assume Pres. Romney will be just as flexible in his approach to most issues.

Turned on the telly yesterday morn and who did appear? St. Mitt --- but no tiny reindeer.

Was Glen Beck back on the air? Did I intercept a video version of Rush from deep right field? No. The Mitt was on the 'Meet the Press'. (No wonder he was prepping in Vermont last week). When was the last time you saw the guy do an interview on 'the mainstream media". OK -- he talked to Lauer at the Olympics -- and endeared himself to the Brits while doing so. Not!
I think he did a short thing while in Israel. What is this - one non-conservative talk show a month?

So there was the Republicans 4th, 5th, 6th choice for President a-flippin' and a-floppin.
Now he's for keeping parts of National Romneycare where previously he was for repealing it. He wants to make sure that folks with pre-existing conditions can get health coverage -- but only if they have had 'continuous coverage'. All of you who have had 'continuous coverage', please, raise your hand. He said he wouldn't raise taxes on middle-class families. (Did he forget who he picked as veep?) I think he promised the same tax thing while Governor of Massachusetts. Then he hiked every fee he could find. "Read my lips! No new _____!"

Romney promises to reduce taxes and maintain the same level of tax revenue. (Say this to your friends -- they'll keep a straight face). He's going to close secret, unspecified loopholes in the tax code. Over Mitch McConnell's dead body, I say.

107 days 'til sequestration.
