Selectmen Candidate's Ban From Library Extends to Debate

Board of Selectmen candidate Dr. Lawrence Delaney was issued a no trespass notice for the Morse Institute Library in September, which will prevent him from participating in the Selectmen Candidate Debate at the library.

A no trespass order issued by the Morse Institute Library will prevent Board of Selectmen candidate Dr. Lawrence Delaney from participating in the upcoming Natick Forever Selectmen’s Debate.

Last September, Delaney, 82, reportedly showed a photograph of a woman and a nude baby with large photo-shopped genitalia to female staff members at the library and when the women told him they were offended by the photograph, he allegedly lost his temper, according to library director Linda Stetson. Stetson said when the police were consulted, it was advised that a no trespass order be put into place.

The debate, scheduled for Feb. 2, will be held at the library as it has been for the past two years. Delaney’s one-year ban from the library would prevent him from participating.

Natick Forever chairman Jimmy Brown said neither he nor anyone else on the committee was aware of the ban when the event was scheduled and that the debate will still be held at the library. Brown said the Morse Institute is an ideal location for the debate because it is a “beautiful site,” the committee has worked well with the library staff in the past and it is an ideal setup to broadcast the event on Natick Pegasus television.

Brown said he informed Delaney that he would be allowed to submit a two-minute speech regarding only his selectmen candidacy that Brown would read at the debate. All other candidates are allowed a one-minute opening statement and a one-minute closing statement. Delaney has not yet responded to the offer, said Brown.

Delaney also faces assault and battery charges filed on March 26, 2010 after he allegedly kicked Officer Allan Graham, who was investigating threat complaints made by the Natick Housing Authority, according to Lt. Brian Grassey.

Delaney is also on the ballot for a five-year seat on the Natick Housing Authority.
