Should Kids Be Allowed to Pick Out Their Own Outfits?

Get in on the discussion!

Natick is full of passionate moms and dads just like you. Each week, Patch invites you to share your advise and opinions with other parents around town by giving your take on the question of the week.

This week in Natick, we're asking:

Should kids be allowed to pick out their own clothes?

While some parents may say they wouldn't let their children be seen at school or out and about in a leotard, polka dotted sweater and stripped tights, others argue letting a child pick out his or her own outfits help breed creativity and independence. Is there a correct age to start letting children have this freedom?

Happy debating!

I never let my younger kids pick out their clothes. How they dress is a reflection of me and my mothering and I want them to look presentable everyday. I've been around longer and unlike some of my kids know that certain things do not go together. I wouldn't want them to get made fun of in school. Once they're 13, they can start picking out their outfits with my direction.

I let them wear pretty much any crazy combination they like. I do try and have them wear clothes that are appropriate for the weather and activity planned - but apart from some gentle persuasion in that area I figure I have much bigger battles to fight. I'll be saving my energy in the meantime!

I am a Mother to an extremely head strong 3 1/2 year old; I have tried everything to get her dressed in the morning. I first tried to persuade her to wear what I laid out, but then it became a battle, then I tried laying out three options, still a battle, I have tried to have the patience to let her pick her own, but she riffles through her dirty clothes hamper looking for worn stuff, that I cannot condone her wearing to preschool because it is dirty. She insist on short sleeves (we live in KS and it is cold), wants to wear skirts with no tights or leggings, I have tried all I know to do, have only two friends with little girls and their strategies are in my post so I tried them and no dice with my daughter. I am at my wits end, it takes us, no joke an hour just to get her ready and out the door. Any other suggestions I might try? PLEASE HELP!
