Where is the Most Dangerous Intersection in Natick?
Natick Patch recently observed several cars turn right on red at an intersection in which doing so is prohibited. Have you seen similar things occur at other intersections in Natick?
On a recent day (before the snow), Natick Patch set about walking around town and noticed several cars turning right on red at the intersection of E. Central St. & S. Main St.
This four-way interection has clearly marked signs that state that there is not right on red allowed, yet many people apparently felt like ignoring them. Maybe they were simply in a rush. Maybe they just didn't care. We don't know their reason.
But we did video one car whose driver appeared to hesitate when at the red light before finally choosing to turn right.
Is this a common occurence around town? Do you think some of the intersections where there is no right on red should allow it? Where are the worst intersections in Natick? Tell us in the comments section.

When I moved here in September, I swear that no turn on red was not there. It kind of appeared one day - at least I had never noticed it before - so many people may be having a delayed reaction!!

You may be right, Jenna, I saw 5-6 people turn right while the light was red in just a few minutes while I walking before I decided to video it to see if other people thought it was a common thing. I'm not sure when those signs first appeared, but it's something that might be worth looking into. Thanks for your comment.

You could turn on red at Rt 27/ Rt 135 until the genius' in Natick put in the crosswalks.
I spoke to the town about why they put in the no turn on red signs. They said they did it because there were several near accidents because the crosswalks going across Rt 135 at the intersection are not at the corner but around the corner 15 feet.
Before the genius' put in the brick crosswalks, the crosswalks were painted and all went directly from the center of the corners. But when they put in the brick, they for some unknown reason moved the 135 crosswalks down the street 15 feet. Now they are a "danger". They were stupid in the design and now they need to fix their screw up by making it 'no turn on red'

Robert, they have been there for about 3 years. It is to fix their stupid choice of brick crosswalk placement.

No doubt that the 4 corners downtown are dangerous. But, I believe the Route 9 and Oak Street Intersection is the most dangerous, having many vehicles making inappropriate right turns on red lights exiting and entering Route 9.

Thanks for your comment, Frank. There are definitely quite a few dangerous intersections where people enter Route 9. I think some of the places where you can pull out of a business's parking lot and right onto the road are pretty unsafe as well.

Route 9/Oak is a death trap.

It's been No turn in Red for a couple years now.
I had a person behind me pounding on his horn screaming in his car at me because I wouldn't turn Right on Red....The signs are there. I thought he was going to get out of his car and beat me! He was clearly not seeing the signs or caring....either way he scared me to death! I didn't go until the light turned green. YIKES!

Those no turn on red signs are placed where no one can see them. I work in downtown and not many people notice them, they also ignore the walk signal. You take your life in to your own hands when you cross the streets in downtown.

Exactly, Ms. Fisher. They need to be placed better. In some cases they should place two signs. The ones on the traffic light booms are great during the day for most people, but not for all people. And they are invisible after dark. Adding a lower sign on the side of the road would help avoid people believing that the no-turn policy is a ticket trap.

They need to fix the placement of the brick crosswalks to the corners and not 15 ft around the corner on the 135 sides. Then it would be a turn on red after stop again and relieve some of the traffic. The screwed up the design, they were always from corner before the yuppie brick crosswalks.

The Walnut and Bacon and Chestnut 5-way stop intersection sees some very dangerous behavior.
Honorable mention goes to to the merge of Rt 9 E and Harvard/Speen St.

I was driving earlier where RT 9 and Harvard/Speen St. intersect and I think you're right- that's certainly a tricky intersection. Has anyone else noticed this one?

That intersection should be reconstructed so that cars all stop where they can see what other cars are already stopped on other streets. The stop line for cars going north on Walnut is way too far from the center of the intersection. And that split yellow line on Bacon Street does not conform to any road design standard that I know. The town might also consider either making Chestnut one-way at that intersection or curbing over the end of Chestnut altogether.

It's Hartford street, not Harvard. Harvard street is downtown natick

The intersection of Rt 27 and Cottage st! We lived around the corner and there were so many accidents there!

There is no stop sign on Rt 27 where there but the nitwits decide to stop. They cause accidents. Why would no stop on 27 where there is no stop sign. Bad bad drivers.

Claredon St. and South Ave. is a terrible area....I am surprised there isn't an accident every day...

I HATE getting on Rt 27 from Speen St. I hate driving past that intersection too! You never know if the cars are going to go, or stop, or something else. Then there is the "yield" sign which most people tend to ignore for the people coming north on Speen to get onto the on ramp.
But my most favorite is when people try and turn right from the left-hand turn lane. That's just special!

Thanks for the insight, Rachael! I think yield signs tend to cause trouble everywhere, and I absolutely hate those right turns from the left lane.

Speen and Rt 27 do not intersect, they are parallel and miles apart. Are you getting your roads mixed up?

Other candidates: Bacon and Marion, Marion and North Ave., North Main and Washington, South Main and Cottage, Cemetery and West Central, Eliot and Everett. Wellesley needs to worry about Bacon and route 135.
