Who's Your Favorite Natick Celebrity?

Whitney Houston, one of the greatest singers of all-time, died one year ago yesterday. Who is your favorite celebrity with local ties?

Yesterday marked the one year anniversary of the death of recording artist Whitney Houston.

The six-time Grammy Award winner, known for such hit songs as I Have Nothing, So Emotional and I Will Always Love You, not to mention her performance of The Star Spangled Banner at Super Bowl XXV in 1991 that has become so iconic that it is the only version of our National Anthem that has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

The town of Natick has also had its fair share of famous people, both historically and more recent. Some of the names of well-known people who have ties to Natick include:

  • Author James Bamford
  • Tony Award Nominated Actress Alison Fraser
  • Football Player Doug Flutie
  • Bruins National Anthem Singer Rene Rancourt
  • Meteorologist Harvey Leonard
  • Harriet Beecher Stowe, Author of Uncle Tom's Cabin
  • Henry Wilson, Vice President to Ulysses S. Grant

There are a number of other people who have achieved "celebrity" status with Natick ties as well. This is just a partial list.

So now we want to know what you think. Who is your favorite Natick celebrity? Tell us in the comments section below.

Hands down Harriet Beecher Stowe. Not to put down any of the above, but Stowe and her writing have survived time and history to emerge as one of the premiere record-keepers the darkest point in our nation's history. The others, while not without value, are (like most of the rest of us) unlikely to be remembered in a century and a half.

My Favorite based on how the community acted at the time is Doug Flutie. Thers is no one else on the list that has made the impact in the town like Doug did. I remember the great parade they had for him. In my travels around the country when I mention Natick people ask about him. Is it good that he is better known than an author (maybe not) but it is reality. Sure his accomplishemtns may be forgotten but mention the names on the list to 100 people and Flutie wins. People that didn't live here at the time may not remember how the town went crazy for Doug but it was awesome to see.
