Homeowners Guide to Working with House Painters

This is a local voices post by William Carr. He writes about various home improvement projects for Daniel Fox Roofing Co., Inc.

House painters are highly skilled and experienced contractors that take a great deal of pride in what they do. When you decide to get your house painted, you will want to bring in several house painters to give you estimates and options to choose from. Once you have decided on a house painter, it is important that a homeowner understand how to work with these experienced professionals to get the right results and make the process as smooth as possible.

Review the Job

Before the contractor gets started painting the interior or exterior of the home, you need to review the job to come to a mutual understanding. The contractor needs to know what you expect of him and you need to know what kind of cooperation the contractor will need to get the job done right. The contractor will review what furniture and possessions need to be moved and you need to let him know the best places to put them. The contractor will also need you and your family to stay out of certain rooms to make sure the job gets done right.

Make it Easier

If you have valuables in a room that the contractor will be working in, then move them on your own and put them in a safe place. The painting contractor will be looking to paint and should not be required to be worried about your valuables. Get everything out of the painting area that you can and make sure that your valuables are stored in a safe place.

Open a Line of Communication

Things can happen quickly during a home painting project and special circumstances can arrive that neither you nor the contractor saw coming. You should not expect to be home during the entire project because family events and errands can often take people away from the home for hours. Make sure that your contractor has a way to get a hold of you at all times that will allow him to ask questions and continue with the project when surprises spring up.

Offer Space

A reputable painting contractor will usually stay within the work area of the project and avoid going to other parts of your home. But it is not unusual for a contractor to need access to areas such as the bathroom or need a place to store supplies for projects that will take more than one day. If you do not have a problem allowing the contractor to keep his work supplies in the work area, then let him know. Otherwise, he will take everything with him and that can require set up time the next day. It is a convenience thing that many contractors will appreciate.
