The Natick school committe and administration will hold a public forum Thursday night to discuss the district's plan for "digital conversion," which would provide every student in grades eight through 12 with a laptop to take home. Natick residents expressed shared concerns and confusion at Monday's school committee meeting, many saying that taxpayers were blindsided by the plan to use $2 million in contingency money from the high school building project to provide every Natick High School student with an Apple laptop to take home. Natick residents tuned into the School Committee forum hosted by Natick Forever on Monday night to hear candidates thoughts about the current state of the school system and their goals for the future. The Natick Public Schools presented the 2012 preliminary budget at a School Committee Meeting Monday night, requesting an increased appropriation budget of $3.4 million from fiscal year 2011. The 7.66 percent increase brings the total request up to $47,784,137. The $3.4 million includes $1.35 in salary increases, $850,400 in reduced offsets, $523,600 in special education tuitions, $253,000 for transportation, $170,000 for curriculum, $192,000 for technology and $67,000 for other purposes. Superintendent Dr. Peter Sanchioni, presented the preliminary Natick Public Schools budget for Fiscal Year 2012 to the School Committee Monday night, proposing a $3.4 million dollar increase from 2011. The Natick School Committee welcomed its newest member Thursday night, after interviewing three candidates to fill the spot once held by committee member David Murphy. With seven of the eleven votes from both the current committee members and the five selectmen, Paul Laurent left with the win. Construction of the new Natick High School is ahead of schedule, said Finance Director for Natick Public Schools William Hurley at a School Committee meeting Monday. The footings and foundations have been set in sections A and B of the building, while sections C and D are "well underway," despite last week's frost. According to Hurley, the steel is being made and is expected to arrive at the site and put into place by the last week of December while the original prediction was in January.
