Local World War II Veteran Selected to Visit National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

NATICK, Ma., (March 12, 2014) - Harold Segal has led an extraordinary life. Born in 1918, Segal served with the Army’s 70th Q.M. Mobile Battalion in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He enlisted in 1939, and quickly progressed through the ranks to First Lieutenant. “I loved the Army. It taught me responsibility, order and discipline. I matured so much,” Segal reflects.

On May 18, 2014, Segal will be a distinguished guest of the “Honor Flight Network,” which helps transport America’s veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit the National World War II Memorial. This once-in-a-lifetime, all-expense paid trip enables veterans to experience the first national memorial dedicated to those who served during World War II. The memorial, which cost $174 million, was designed by architect Friedrich St. Florian. It was completed in 2004 and boasts fountains, waterfalls and grand pillars labeled with the names of each U.S. state and territory that contributed to the war effort.

The Honor Flight Network, a non-profit organization, was created solely to honor America's veterans for all their sacrifices and to enable them to visit and reflect on their memorials. Participation priority is generally given to senior veterans. Segal, who has been on the waiting list for several years, is very excited. “I’m really looking forward to touring the World War II Memorial and I’m thrilled to be getting away!” he stated.
