DISCUSSION: Should the Town of Natick Build a Dog Park?

Melissa Cusson and Sonja Vitow are trying to gauge interest from fellow residents.

UPDATE:

David Coffey, the clerk for the Open Space Advisory Committee, reported on the Natick Patch Facebook page that the Committee is putting the topic of building a dog park in Natick on the agenda for the Oct. 10 meeting (7:30 p.m.). Positive suggestions as well as areas of concern will be welcome.

Below is the original story.

Take a long look. You won't find one. But do you want one?

That's the question Melissa Cusson and Sonja Vitow want to ask fellow residents, whether the Town of Natick should build a dog park.

Both are thinking about bringing the topic to town leaders, but if the interest isn't there they don't think it's worth the effort.

"We want to see what kind of backing we can get before bringing this to the town," said Cusson, a dog owner herself.

"If we’re the only two people who want a dog park then there’s no point (in this)," added Vitow, who plans on having a dog in the near future.

Both would like to see an area in town where they can take their dogs off leash and allow them to run in a large, fenced-in area.

"Socializing dogs is so important for canine and human safety and a safe, respected dog park provides the owners with a great outlet for all that puppy energy," said Cusson, with her dog, Cooper, on her lap.

Currently, Cusson said she has to drive at least 20 minutes to find dog park.

"It's a harder fight than you would think" Vitow said. "It seems to me it's a big oversight that there isn't one."

What do you think, Natick? Should the town have it's own dog park? Tell us in the comments section below.
