Kennedy Middle School Weekly Newsletter

Donations of gently used games sought.

We had our first full week of school and the school year has gotten off to a very positive start. We'd like to thank the Natick firefighters & police officers who participated in the 8th grade 9/11 Memorial program yesterday. As part of this learning experience developed by the 8th grade Language & Literacy teachers, students were able to participate in an obstacle course, try on firefighting equipment and participated in a roundtable discussion with firefighters and staffabout their experiences on that day in 2001. We are very grateful to all the staff and the personnel of the Natick Police & Fire Departments for sharing their experiences with our students.

This afternoon our Guidance Department hosted a welcome to KMS program to welcome the 24 new students who enrolled in Kennedy over the summer. We'd also like to send a warm welcome to the students' families as well!

School Council Openings
Currently, there are three open slots on the Kennedy School Council. Two parent positions and one opening for a community member, that is someone who does not have children at KMS.

We have two parents who are interested in serving on the council and we would like to open it up to the rest of the Kennedy community. Meetings are held once per month at 7:30 in the morning.  If you are a parent and interested in running for a School Council position, please notify me via email by 9/20/13.

We are also asking parents to let other members of the Natick community know there is a School Council position opening as well. If you know of someone who might be interested, please ask them to contact me directly via phone or email:   rovickery@natickps.org

Parent Portal (iPass) Update:
The recent update to the user interface for iPass requires the use of a current browser.    Be sure to use a current version of Firefox, Chrome or Internet Explorer 10.

The iPass upgrade was necessary for our district to get updated software for the online gradebook and the new features that are planned for release later this year from our vendor.

Did your child forget something at school?
If your child has forgotten something at school, you'll need to return to school before 3:30 in order to gain entry to the building. There are no staff available in the front office after that time to let students in and the ASAP staff are authorized to only let in the parents of students in the ASAP program.
Thank you!

Donations needed:
Calling all gently used games! Did your Andy go off to college this fall? The Natick Jr. Medical Reserve Corps. (MRC) is looking for gently used games and new coloring supplies to be used in emergency shelters for disaster relief. We will be collecting these at Natick DaysSaturday, September 21st. Please look for our table which will be located near town hall. All donations are welcome!

 News from the Libraries:

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month and to celebrate we are helping our students get library cards for the Morse Institute Library (and therefore, the Minuteman Library Network) if they don't already have one. Such a card allows students access to many resources that are helpful for schoolwork, homework and pleasure.

The students can see Mrs. Rotkiewicz to get a library card sign up form. If parents DO NOT want their child to get a card, they should contact Mrs. Rotkiewicz.

We are working on this library card initiative in conjunction with the Morse Institute Library, and the library is offering a program for middle school & high school students (and the adults in their lives) calledHelpful Homework Resources on Wednesday, Oct. 2nd at 7 pm. It is an opportunity to learn about the many library resources that are available 24/7 and to learn about finding reliable information."

Coins for the 3000 Challenge (formerly known as the 3000 Coin Challenge)

Once again this year, Kennedy will be collecting change to donate to the Natick Service Council Telethon. Last year the Kennedy Middle School community raised $550 dollars, and we are hoping to surpass that amount this year.   The "Coins for the 3000 Challenge" will "kickoff" on Monday, September 9th and run until Tuesday, October 8th.

The "Coins for the 3000 Challenge" is a way for Kennedy to "Think Globally and Act Locally." We begin theChallenge near the anniversary of 9/11 to remember the approximately 3000 people who lost their lives on that day (that's the Global part), and we will be donating all of the money we collect to the Natick Service Council during their telethon on October 9th (that's the Local part).

Every little bit helps, so we thank you in advance for your generosity.
