“The Sustainable Materials Recovery Program is a vital program with proven success and I thank the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection for their commitment to recycling efforts in the Fifth Middlesex District,” said Representative Linsky.

According to the MassDEP, the Sustainable Materials Recovery Program (SMRP) was created under 310 CMR 19.300-303 and the Green Communities Act.  The SMRP uses proceeds from the sale of Waste Energy Certificates to support municipal and regional recycling efforts.  This year, the Town of Natick will receive $140,745 for Wheeled Recycling Carts and $4,962 for Educational Materials to publicize the curbside recycling program.  The Town of Sherborn will receive $500 for a Targeted Small Scale Initiative.

“This state grant pays for the new recycling containers recently put to use in Natick so that the town can utilize its new cost-efficient recycling truck with the robotic pick-up system,” said Representative Linsky.  “Providing cities and towns with the resources to implement important recycling efforts is a step toward a more sustainable future.”

The SMRP provides essential resources for cities and towns to practice effective recycling and composting initiatives to benefit the environment and diversify solid waste disposal.  MassDEP received applications from 144 municipalities, regional groups and non-profits.  MassDEP has awarded $2.47 million to 137 recipients through the SMRP.
