Markey Proposes Recommendations for Biden's Gun Task Force

Congressman Ed Markey sent a letter to Vice President Joe Biden Wednesday calling for a new assault weapons ban and improved background checks, among other measures.

Congressman Ed Markey sent a letter to the vice president Wednesday with proposed recommendations for his task force on guns.

In the letter (attached), the Democrat from Malden asks Joe Biden to consider recommending “a new assault weapons ban that includes all semi-automatic weapons capable of accommodating an ammunition magazine greater than 10 rounds.” He also asks the vice president to consider “a ban on ‘drums’ or ‘magazines’ of ammunition that can carry more than 10 bullets, which were used to deadly effect in both the Newtown and Aurora kilings.”

“These are weapons designed for war – not for hunting or protecting one’s home – and have no purpose except to kill as many people as possible without the need to reload,” Markey wrote.

In the letter, Markey also suggests recommendations requiring background checks for all gun sales (not just those from federally licensed dealers) and steps for improving the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), particularly as it relates to mental health records.

He also wants Biden to consider recommending the repeal of the restrictions imposed by the “Tiahrt Amendments,” which Markey believe “hinder the ability of law enforcement to pursue gun-related crimes,” and lifting the prohibition on federally funded firearms research.

“There is no single solution that will prevent tragedies such as the horror inflicted upon the victims and their families and loved ones in Newtown,” Markey wrote, “but the rapid advancement in firearms technology should compel lawmakers to take a hard look at the laws governing these deadly weapons.

“Each of us has a responsibility to fight for saner, safer gun laws that uphold the Second Amendment while protecting the security of our schools, streets and communities.”

How about also eliminating the ability of civilians to buy tear gas or whatever type of gas grenade I've been hearing about that was used in Aurora. No civilian use for such things.

I do not know much about him but I question the timing. Seems he is using the hot topic of the day to drum up support. Did he care about this issue 6 months ago? This is a political play!

Markey is very knowledgeable about this, heard him speak at an open forum after Newtown, god bless their souls. He said some good things and knew the laws very well. He taught this ol girl a thing or two about gun ownership. This whole thing is crazy.

Markey doesn't know anything about firearms. What the heck kind of stupid proposal is a "new assault weapons ban that includes all semi-automatic weapons capable of accommodating an ammunition magazine greater than 10 rounds"? There is no such thing as a "assault weapon", it's a political term made up in the early 1990's. If a person attacks someone with a butter knife, they are committing an assault with a weapon, is that an "assault weapon"? Firearms like an AR 15 are just modern style sport and hunting rifles. The ammunition most fire, the .223 is a small round. You cannot legally hunt with that round in most states, it's too small to kill a deer quickly. But the AR 15 platform is modular. You can switch out a few parts and have it fire larger ammo for deer, moose, etc. It takes less than 2 seconds to switch magazines. Limiting the magazine size is nothing more than a feel good measure. That and a ban on modern style rifles will not change a thing except limit the rights of law abiding people. The VT shooter used two pistols similar to what a typical cop has and millions of people have for self defense to kill 34 and wound 17 in 2007. A handgun at close to medium range is just as deadly as a modern rifle. Gear things to stop the nuts, don't infringe rights. Oh yeah, Tim McVeigh killed nearly 200 with fertilizer and diesel fuel. Nuts will find weapons.
