Natick Teen Hosting Cancer Fundraiser at Natick Elks

Dance will be held from 7-11:30 p.m.

Andrew Cigna is trying to make a difference for those suffering from cancer.

The 17-year-old Natick High School student stood before the Board of Selectmen on Nov. 4, asking for a one-day entertainment license to be used at the Natick Elks on Speen Street on Nov. 8.

Proceeds will go toward the American Cancer Society and Pencils of Promise, an organization that builds schools for third-world countries.

"Why not get group of people and my class together and raise money for something important to me and my family," he said, adding he learned to DJ from his father, Ross.

The Board approved the temporary license, which will be used from 7-11:30 p.m.

But members had reservations about a request to not have it detailed by police.

Ross Cigna said the fundraiser wouldn't be successful if they had to pay for an officer's detail.

"Our funds are extremely low," he said. "We will have adult supervision on premises."

Ross Cigna assured the Board no bags would be allowed in, pocketbooks would be checked for alcohol and tagged, and there would be no re-entry.

In a letter to the Board, Lt. Brian Lauzon recommend approval with the request that one detail officer be required as part of the permit.

"Our philosophy is to recommend to the Board that with 100 or more ticket sales open to anyone, we recommend a detail," Police Chief James Hicks. "Our recommendation is to stay consistent, and have one officer detailed."

To help with the cost, Hicks said he would ask his staff if someone would be willing to donate their time on Nov. 8.

The Cignas said they expect between 100-115 people to attend the dance. The price for a ticket is $6 in advance only. No tickets will be sold at the door.
