Missing Natick Patch

There was a wonderful tribute to a dedicated town employee yesterday throughout Natick and not one mention here this morning here on Natick Patch. This site has become useless!

Hi D Penta, thank you for the many notes you have left on our sites. I often say that while winning awards and praise from readers are great, as journalists, we learn more from criticism and critique. The death of Michael McDaniels was a tragic one for the community. However, in more than 20 years of working in media, in many different formats (print, online, and radio, in two states), I've never covered a funeral and don't ever intend to. It's intrusive. Funerals and wakes are private ceremonies for family and friends to mourn in peace without worrying about the media. Natick Patch did, however, post the funeral information and traffic notice and the gofundme fundraising post. As you already know, we're going through some changes at Patch in an effort to continue all the great things we were doing before in a sustainable way. We're trying a bunch of different things and we appreciate your patience as we shake things out a bit and learn what works with our readers and customers and what doesn't. Thanks again for reading!

CBS Boston thought it was appropriate to mention it. http://boston.cbslocal.com/2014/02/10/natick-says-final-goodbye-to-long-time-dpw-worker/ as did the WCVB site: http://www.wcvb.com/news/local/metro-west/town-to-honor-dpw-worker-killed-in-accident/24384476 Oh, and the WDHD site as well: http://www.whdh.com/story/24678638/funeral-held-monday-for-natick-dpw-worker Also the MetroWest Daily News put it on the front page of the paper that day, and posted many photos online. http://www.metrowestdailynews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/gallery?Site=WL&Date=20140210&Category=PHOTOGALLERY&ArtNo=210009987&Ref=PH&taxoid=&refresh=true It shows how completely out of touch the new (non-local) editors are with the towns they are supposed to be reporting on. This was a state wide memorial for this man, here's a quote showing what you missed: "Hundreds of public works employees from throughout the state were present at St. Patrick's Church in Natick, lining the street and driving vehicles for the funeral of Michael McDaniel..." I certainly hope that a mayor, a governor or even the president do not pass on your watch, as there will be no coverage of the funeral or memorial in the Natick Patch.

Thanks Laura, I appreciate the comments. I didn't say it wasn't newsworthy; I said I don't cover funerals or wakes. I haven't covered them in any of the cities or towns I have worked in for more than two decades in media and won't ever. Sorry.

Just one more note - Tony, I hope that you don't take all this personally - the comments only continue because the new platform is just not working for the readers. I do understand it must be difficult to try to figure out what is and isn't important news in a town that you do not live in. So please, any comments you see from me are strictly to try to reinforce to the new owners of Patch that this is not working and we miss our old Patch reporting, and not to specifically bash you or your reporting. You (and the other remaining editors across the country) are , unfortunately, the new owners' first line of defense, and I do feel sorry that you have to deal with the brunt of the issue while the owners continue to remain silent to the pleas of it's readers. At the very least they could post a "Trending" article to let the readers know if there is any intent to change anything in the future, if for no other reason than to lighten the weight that is on your shoulders.

@Laura: - Do you mean one like this? There are more than 100 comments. I work in the tech industry and this has been bounced around our offices. http://natick.patch.com/groups/trending-in-america/p/looking-back-looking-forward-whats-next-for-patch
