Pet Waste: We Have a Lot of Work to Do!

Hi Friends,
Made a sad discovery this morning as I was emptying the BHLF units at Loker Conservation Area (Wayland).  A dog owner explained to me that the LCA and Greenways are popular dog areas.  As many as 60 - 70 dogs can be at the LCA on any given day (at certain times).  I probed further.  She detailed that Weston has rigorous regulations and enforcement ($750 for a dog license, and no more than 4 - 5 dogs allowed at any one time on a trail).  Many dog folks thus choose to come to "dog friendly" Wayland.  I simply couldn't figure out why there was so much pet waste accumulating at LCA.  Now I have a better understanding. She says that Greenways is even worse.  I don't know, Tom, would you agree?  Not sure what to do about it.
If it makes you feel any better (sorry, it makes me feel even worse), we struggle with the same problems in my neighborhood (West Natick) and on our Natick Trails (despite the presence of about a dozen BHLF units -- see photo).  Maybe Wayland Walks, Wayland ConCom, Natick Trails Maintenance Committee (of which I'm a member), and Natick Con Com will be able to help us.  A link for alarming info on pet waste, in case you don't already know how bad it is for people and the watershed. <http://clean-water.uwex.edu/pubs/pdf/pet.pdf>    --Pat
