Natick Swears in New Police Lieutenant

Paul Thompson will be a provisional lieutenant until his retirement later this year.

Natick Police Sgt. Paul Thompson was recently promoted and sworn in as a lieutenant at Town Hall.

Thompson takes the position on a provisional basis until the Board of Selectmen creates a short list for the permanent post.

Police Chief James Hicks said last month he was not comfortable giving a promotion to the one candidate who passed the exam.

Hicks asked the Board to create the short list and promote Thompso, who plans to retire later this year.

Hicks said Thompson plans to retire in May or June when a new list would be available.

The one candidate who passed the exam was Sgt. Mark St. Hilaire.

Selectman Nick Mabardy, a former Natick police chief, said he felt the refusal to give St. Hilaire the promotion was unfair and he shouldn't be punished for being the only person to pass the test.
