Mass. Resident Infected with E. Coli; Linked to Ground Beef Recall

A Massachusetts resident was infected with E. coli, which officials said was likely linked to a nationwide ground beef recall.

The Michigan-based Wolverine Packing Company recalled 1.8 million pounds of beef that was produced between March 31 and April 18, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Monday. The meat was shipped to distributors for restaurant use in Massachusetts and several other states.

NBC News reported the recall was announced after 11 people in four states were infected with E. coli. MassLive.com reported one of them is a resident of Hampshire County.

The affected packaged products have the establishment number "EST. 2574B" and have a production date code in the format "Packing Nos: MM DD 14" between "03 31 14" and "04 18 14."

The products were shipped to distributors for restaurant use in Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, and Ohio, officials said.

E. coli can be fatal in some cases. It causes dehydration, nausea, bloody diarrhea and, abdominal cramping.

Authorities said beef cooked to an internal temperature of 160 degrees will kill E. coli and other bacteria.

How can we find out what restaurants the beef was sent to/used at? That is more helpful than a mention the person lives in Hampshire county.
