Brown Elementary School Principal Addresses Newtown Shooting

Kirk Downing chose to treat yesterday like any school day because the capacity to understand what happened in Newtown could vary greatly in a K-4 setting. He decided to let the conversations be initiated by students, rather than by faculty and staff.

School districts all over the area have had to address uneasiness and parent concerns after Friday's tragic school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

Here in Natick, Superintendent Peter Sanchioni alerted parents on Friday afternoon that all schools would begin locking and staffing their front doors.

Brown Elementary School principal Kirk Downing chose not to make any drastic changes to the day for his students, as he felt that with students that young some may not understand fully what happened, and some may not even be aware of it at all.

According to an interview Downing did with WBUR, he decided to let the school day go on like any other school day, with no plans for teachers to discuss the tragic incident in Newtown unless students brought it up.

"Let the conversations come to us," Downing told WBUR.
