UPDATED: Computer at Wilson Middle School Hacked

School officials say students have admitted to the hacking.

A Wilson Middle School student hacked his own computer earlier today and determined an administrative password that would allow him greater access to administrative rights, the school announced in an email.

"It was immediately detected by the technology staff and teachers, the child was located, questioned, and his technique discovered," the email read.

The hacking occurred in one of the eighth-grade one-to-one classrooms involving computer security, compromising administrative passwords.

"After initial interviews, several students have admitted taking and using the administrative passwords," the email reads. "Our concern at this point, relates to the grades being posted by teachers as the trimester ends.

"As a result, we will be keeping all laptops at Wilson over the weekend as we continue our investigation and decide on consequences after the holiday."

The school is asking parents to have a conversation with their child about the implications of computer hacking, and welcome any additional information that may help it in keeping the learning environment safe and secure.

Student laptops are being kept in-house for inspection over the long weekend so any other potentially involved students and laptops could be located, Assistant Superintendent Anna P. Nolin said in a separate email.

"The integrity of database information, grades, and the Wilson network were not compromised in any way," she wrote. "The student and the student's parents have been cooperative, and appropriate discipline in keeping with the middle school behavior rubric and Acceptable Use Guidelines will be enforced.

"While any situation where a student tests the limits and makes such a mistake is unfortunate, our laptop program safeguards, staff training, and highly-connected staff were able to intervene, keep children and school safe, and allow us to educate further."
