Carney informed staff and parents she applied for the position and was named a finalist, last week before school vacation began.

"Please know that Walsh is a very special place to me and it was a very difficult decision to even apply. I am at the stage in my career where I believe it may be time for a new challenge as I have been at Walsh for over ten years," wrote Carney in an email to parents. "I am not looking for other jobs other than this one and I'm still in the process of figuring out if the position in Natick is the right one for me. Please know that regardless of what happens, I am very happy at Walsh and will continue to work hard and collaborate with the Walsh community to make it be the best school it can be."

Carney, a Framingham resident, told the school community that there are "a few more steps in the process. If I am offered this position, I will keep you up to date on my decision. It should be in early March."

Walsh is one of three middle schools in Framingham. It has just under 700 students. The state has graded it a level 2 school. (Editor's Note: Level 1 is considered the best level.)

Framingham's two other middle schools Cameron (a level 2 school) and Fuller (a level 3 school) both have new principals, that were hired in 2013.

Wilson Middle School in Natick is also a level 2 school, with just over 900 students.

Its former principal, Anna Nolin was named Assistant Superintendent for Teaching, Learning and Innovation for Natick Public Schools in June 2013.
