Cheerleading is a Sport, Says American Medical Association

By approving the new policy, the AMA is suggesting better safety measures in cheerleading.

The American Medical Association has declared that cheerleading is a sport because of its “rigors and risks,” according to the Associated Press.

The nation’s large doctors’ association adopted that policy during its annual meeting in Chicago this week.

The AMA declared that “cheerleading is as rigorous as many other activities that high schools and the NCAA consider sports.”

By approving the new policy, the AMA is suggesting better safety measures in cheerleading.

The American Academy of Pediatrics approved a similar policy two years ago.

Many states do recognize it. There are only a few left that don't. Pop Warner is recognized at a national level. My daughter was on a national winning pop warner team when she was younger. It's only a matter of time before all high school leagues recognize it.

It is very important that states do start to recognize it as a sport. It needs to be regulated for the safety of the girls. Many teams require them to practice for far too long each day and without the proper safety equipment.

High school cheer has 4:seasons 1. Football season 2. Basketball season 3. Competition season 4. Summer for camp Allstar teams cheer all year round. If a high school cheerleader doesn't like cheering games then maybe high school cheer Isn't for her. Allstar might be better. It is very important to keep that tradition of cheering at games. cheerleading is more than justttt competition . Cheerleaders bring school spirit to the school at EVERY event. Thats their main job as a high school cheerleader.

Whether someone is being judged for skill or points should not affect whether something is a sport or not. Cheering is as competitive as any sport yet more dangerous as the squad does not wear safety equipment such as helmets or pads. They have mats that break their fall. The cheer squads practice and train vigorously endurance, stamina and winning makes these teams work hard...just like any other sport.
