We at Patch like to have fun – even when we’re covering a story as big as the Blizzard of ’13! So when the biggest storm in years (potentially in the history of Boston weather) is headed our way, we get into battle mode – and even get a little silly. That’s what this idea is about – and we want you to take part too! A fun way we want to track the storm across Massachusetts is through lawn ornaments. They serve a purpose in the spring and summer, but often feel left out in the cold of winter. Not anymore. Governor Deval Patrick has declared a State of Emergency, but what does that mean?
Governor Deval Patrick declared a state of emergency today banning car travel after 4 p.m. According to information from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, a state of emergency can involve different measures and does not always affect travel or private businesses. There may be a request for drivers to stay off the roads and for businesses to change their hours, but the governor may also order roads to be closed to non-emergency traffic. There has not been an ordered ban on travel since the Blizzard of '78. Violators could be fined up to $500 and be sentenced to a year in jail, although Governor Patrick says the main purpose is to get non-essential people off the roads. The Blizzard of ’78 has to be the most photographed and videoed winter storm in the history of New England. Images of stranded cars, battered coastlines and children playing in giant snowdrifts are all vivid memories of that historic storm. As New Englanders, we commemorated the 35th anniversary of the storm earlier this week – and now Mother Nature is celebrating herself with what could be one of the biggest snowstorms in history. OK, so that two feet of snow we were preparing to get last night? Better add another foot to that. The National Weather Service on Friday morning adjusted its predicted snowfall totals to three feet. The timing of the snowfall is roughly the same: with light snow falling in Worcester, Middlesex and Norfolk counties Friday morning, and becoming heavy later in the afternoon and into the Friday evening commute. So, as WHDH meteorologist Jeremy Reiner notes in his blog, you have a "few hours left this morning" to run some errands, but travel will deteriorate this afternoon. Snow from this possibly historic storm is predicted to become heavy during the Friday evening commute.
Are you ready for what could become the biggest winter storm since 2003? A blizzard warning is in effect from 6 a.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday. This "potential historic winter storm," is expected to drop 18 to 24 inches of heavy snow over Natick and the surrounding towns, according to the National Weather Service. Drawing comparisons to storms in 2005 and 2003 (22.5 inches and 27.5 inches in the Boston area), WHDH meteorologist Pete Bouchard blogged that this could be "the biggest snowstorm in almost a decade." Light snow will develop by Friday morning and become heavy late in the day, into the evening commute. The Natick Public Schools will be closed on Friday.
After much discussion among parents in the community about when school would be cancelled, Superintendent of the Natick Public Schools Peter Sanchioni made the announcement with a couple of clicks when he Tweeted it out at 6:44 p.m. With the Natick area expected to get as much as 24 inches of snow, the announcement wasn't a surprise. Natickites will now brace for what may be the largest snow storm since the Blizzard of '78. Stay tuned to the Natick Patch Storm Center, where we will provide updates throughout the storm and its aftermath.
The National Weather Service predicts as much as two feet of snow in some areas, including Natick.
Several areas in Southeastern New England, including Natick, should expect between 18 and 24 inches of snow beginning on Friday at 6 a.m. and continuing until 1 p.m. on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. The snow will be light on Friday morning, but it will get very heavy on Friday night and into Saturday morning. The wind will be up around 60 MPH, and the roads are expected to be white out conditions. The National Weather Service advises that people stay indoors for the duration of the blizzard.
