Natick's Unofficial Results for Special Primary

Ed Markey (D) and Gabriel Gomez (R) came out on top in Natick in the special primary election for U.S. Senate today.

The special election for U.S. Senate has been building momentum for months as Masschusetts looks to replace John Kerry, who is now the United States Secretary of State. Now, the unofficial results are in for the voting here in Natick. On the Democrat side, longtime Congressman Ed Markey received 71.92 percent (2323 of 3230 total votes) of the vote. Stephen Lynch received 27.93 percent, or 902 total votes. There were also five write-in votes. Republicans in Natick chose former Navy Seal Gabriel Gomez, who received 50.37 percent of the votes (480 of 953 total). Michael Sullivan received 33.16 percent (316 total) of the vote, while Daniel Winslow rounded out the race with 15.95 percent (152 total). The Republicans also had five write-in votes…

Today is the special primary election for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts. This election became necessary when longtime Massachusetts' Senator John Kerry became United States Secretary of State. Patch recently interviewed the candidates to learn about their opinions on a number of local, regional and national issues. Polls in Natick will be open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. Here is a list of polling locations, as well as which precincts vote at which location: Please note that voters in precincts 7 and 9 now vote in the Community-Senior Center. Lynch, Markey Debate Health Care, Outside Funding

Candidates for U.S. Senate Democratic nomination squared off in Lowell Monday.

U.S. Congressmen Stephen Lynch and Edward Markey met in their second debate Monday ahead of the Democratic U.S. Senate special primary in a contest that contained few fireworks outside of an exchange on health care. The debate, held at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and sponsored by the college and the Boston Herald, lasted about 45 minutes and touched a wide variety of issues on which the two Democrats mostly agreed. An early question was asked about the candidates' positions on the Affordable Care Act. Markey (D-Malden) voted in favor of the bill that passed in 2010 while Lynch (D-South Boston) was one of few Democrats who opposed it. Lynch, Markey Debate Tonight in Lowell

The Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate meet in their second debate.

The combatants for the Democratic nomination in the U.S. Senate special election will square off tonight in Lowell for their second debate leading up to the April 30 primary. Congressmen Edward Markey (D-Malden) and Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) will participate in the debate being held at 7:30 p.m. at Durgin Hall on the campus of the University of Massachusetts Lowell. The debate is being sponsored by UMass Lowell’s Center for Public Opinion and the Boston Herald. Questions for the debate will be posed by UMass Lowell students while the moderator will be reporter Jaclyn Cashman, according to the university. Five Submit Required Signatures for U.S. Senate Race

Two Democrats and three Republicans submitted the needed 10,000 names.

Two Democrats and three Republicans submitted the required number of signatures to run in the special election for U.S. Senate, according to the Boston Globe. U.S. Reps. Edward Markey (D-Malden) and Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) each filed more than double the 10,000 certified signatures required. Markey led the way with nearly 34,000 signatures, while Lynch had just over 25,000. On the Republican side, former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan filed nearly 19,000 signatures, followed by former Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez of Cohasset at almost 17,000 and state Rep. Daniel Winslow of Norfolk at more than 13,000. Those totals only include those signatures submitted to the Secretary of State's office by Wednesday's 5 p.m. deadline. City and town …

Lynch Announces U.S. Senate Run on Facebook

Stephen Lynch posted a YouTube video this morning with his announcement.

While Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) isn’t expected to make a formal announcement until later this afternoon, a new Stephen Lynch for Senate Facebook page popped up this morning with a link to a “Stephen Lynch for US Senate Announcement” YouTube video that announces Lynch’s Senate candidacy. Earlier in the morning, the Stephen Lynch for Congress Facebook page had posted a message directing people to the newly created Senate page for news “on today’s plans and schedule.” Lynch is expected to make an announcement at 4 p.m. this afternoon at the Ironworkers Local 7 Hall in South Boston. Gov. Patrick Names William “Mo” Cowan Interim Senator

Markey is in, Lynch is set to make an announcement, and Brown is reportedly considering throwing his hat into the race for John Kerry's seat.

With Tuesday's official nomination of U.S. Senator John Kerry to the post of Secretary of State, the field is opening up with folks vying for Kerry's seat in the U.S. Senate. But before that even happens, an interim senator has to be named. On Wednesday, Gov. Deval Patrick announced his former chief of staff William “Mo” Cowan will be the interim senator and will serve until a new senator is elected in the June 25 special election. Patch reported in December that Cowan, a Stoughton resident, would be stepping down and returning to the private sector. Date Set For Massachusetts Special Senate Election

Nomination papers for candidate will be available soon.

The special election to fill the U.S. Senate seat John Kerry will likely soon vacate will be held on June 25, according to the Boston Globe. The primary election will be held on April 30. Kerry, who has been nominated to become the next Secretary of State, will likely submit his resignation on Tuesday, Jan. 29 immediately before the full U.S. Senate votes to confirm him, according to the Globe. Markey Proposes Recommendations for Biden's Gun Task Force

Congressman Ed Markey sent a letter to Vice President Joe Biden Wednesday calling for a new assault weapons ban and improved background checks, among other measures.

Congressman Ed Markey sent a letter to the vice president Wednesday with proposed recommendations for his task force on guns. In the letter (attached), the Democrat from Malden asks Joe Biden to consider recommending “a new assault weapons ban that includes all semi-automatic weapons capable of accommodating an ammunition magazine greater than 10 rounds.” He also asks the vice president to consider “a ban on ‘drums’ or ‘magazines’ of ammunition that can carry more than 10 bullets, which were used to deadly effect in both the Newtown and Aurora kilings.” “These are weapons designed for war – not for hunting or protecting one’s home – and have no purpose except to kill as many people as possible without the need to reload,” Markey wrote. Kerry, Kennedy Back Markey for Senate

The incumbent senator and widow of the late Sen. Kennedy both spoke positively about Markey's candidacy on Friday.

A day after announcing his intention to run for U.S. Senate, Congressman Ed Markey received the backing of some big names in the Democratic party, including the incumbent senator, on Friday. Senator John Kerry, Vicki Kennedy, widow of the late Sen.
