The U.S. Senator toured the facility on Friday before speaking about the need to fight the sequester.
Elizabeth Warren, the recently elected Democrat who represents Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate, was in Natick on Friday to receive a private tour of Natick Soldier Systems Center. "This is a place that saves lives," Warren said of Natick Labs. "What happens here is innovation." Speaking strongly against the sequester, which would affect approximately 1,500 civilian employees at the Natick base by forcing them to take 22 days off unpaid to save the government $9.789 million, Warren said that seeing Natick Labs in person reminded her how wrong the sequester is. Continuing a commitment to provide economic relief for businesses across the Commonwealth, Senator Karen Spilka (D-Ashland) announced the Senate passage of a supplemental budget bill that freezes the unemployment insurance premiums paid by businesses. Without the freeze, the rate would increase by over $200 per employee, with the average business seeing payments jump from $726 to $932 for each worker. “By freezing the unemployment insurance rate, we are once again taking steps to help businesses expand and hire additional employees,” said Spilka. “As our economy continues to recover, it is important that we remain dedicated to providing relief to local businesses and …

The eighth grade students asked the legislators what inspired them to get involved in politics and government.
Friday morning, eighth graders at the Christa McAuliffe Regional Charter School in Framingham, some of whom are from Natick, had the opportunity to ask questions of the school's state representatives and state senator as part of the first-ever state legislator day at the middle school. Sen. Karen Spilka, who grew up in New York City, wanted to be a diver when she was younger. She started her political career as a social worker, after graduating from Northeastern University she told a classroom full of eighth grade scholars. Rep. More than 100 people, half of whom spoke, told the MBTA's general manager cuts in commuter rail service and increase in the RIDE fares are unacceptable at a hearing in Framingham Tuesday night.
MetroWest residents flocked to the Memorial Building in Framingham Tuesday night to ask MBTA executives to think twice before reducing services, as proposed. Under both service reduction proposals by the MBTA, to eliminate $169 million in debt, commuter rail service on the Boston-Framingham-Worcester line would end at 10 p.m. on weekdays and be eliminated on weekends. Along with the service reduction, fare increases to the commuter rail are proposed between 30 to 40 percent. The town recognized the installation of solar panels at Wilson Middle School at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday.
Wilson Middle School recognized the installation of new solar kiosk on Tuesday. The switch to solar at Wilson, Kennedy, Ben-Hem and the new Natick High School is expected to cut back on the schools' energy use by 46 percent—the equivalent of taking 93 cars off the road, according to energy company Amaresco. The project will also offer educational opportunities for Natick's students. An LCD screen in the Wilson lobby will display the panels' current performance and students will learn about different types of energy in their classes.
