The Saturday suspension of mail delivery debate applies to today: but not because of USPS budget problems!
Whether you can make it to your mailbox or not, there won't be any mail waiting there for you. Mail service in all of New England — not just Massachusetts — has been suspended, according to the Huffington Post. The ban extends throughout all six New England states. The unusual decision was made due to safety concerns, according to Postal Service spokeswoman Christine Dugas. The decision came after over two feet of snow falling throughout much of New England made many roads impassable, she said. Dugas reminded people to clear around their mailboxes or paths to their homes by Monday, when mail delivery will resume.

In the coming weeks, Congressmen Edward Markey and Stephen Lynch will likely try to distance themselves as they seek the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate. But on Wednesday, both men spoke out about the U.S. Postal Service’s proposal to cut first-class mail delivery on Saturday. The plan calls to end regular mail service, while maintaining Saturday delivery for packages and express mail. Facing bankruptcy, the U.S. Postal Service is planning to close post offices and processing centers, which could result in slower delivery times.
An estimated $3 billion in U.S. Postal Service reductions is expected to create delivery delays for the first time in decades. Details of the wide-sweeping changes, which are expected to include closing 3,700 local post offices and cutting 100,000 employees, are expected to be released today, The Huffington Post reported. Saturday delivery, which has been in question as the postal service faces bankruptcy, will remain for at least two years. The cuts would reportedly close roughly 250 of the nearly 500 mail processing centers across the country as early as next March.
