How Does Wrestling Being Dropped from the Olympics Affect the Sport Locally?

Considered to be the second oldest competitive sport, behind track and field, it's been nearly three weeks since the International Olympic Committee announced that wrestling would be dropped from the Summer Games in 2020.

The vast majority of people involved in the world of wrestling were shocked when the International Olympic Committee announced that they were recommending that the sport be dropped from the Summer Games beginning in 2020. Often referred to as one of the "Olympic sports," the time when wrestling seems to be spotlighted to the masses has always been every four years at the Summer Games, so questions could be raised about whether the popularity of the sport is still at a healthy level. Natick High School wrestling coach Bob Anniballi, who said he was among those blindsided by the IOC's recommendation to eliminate wrestling from the Olympics, said that there aren't any questions about wrestling's popularity. Catholic Memorial Wrestlers Earn 4 Sectional Titles

Natick's Mark Gutierrez was one of the winners.

The following was submitted by Catholic Memorial: Catholic Memorial School’s varsity wrestling team captured four individual titles at the Division II Metro Sectional Tournament on Saturday, February 16 at Quincy High School. Those earning titles included junior Mark Gutierrez of Natick and senior Paul Curtin of Millis, who won their brackets in the 120- and 132-lb. divisions. "I'm proud of this team," said Coach Alex Strum, who will lead them to states at Marshfield on February 19. "Four sectional titles is a school record and it was the most of any team in the section." Wrestlers Fall to North Andover in State Championship

For the second year in a row, the Red and Blue lost to the Scarlet Knights in the Division 2 title match.

Whether they were disgusted by the outcome — a 32-25 loss to North Andover in Wednesday’s Division 2 state wrestling championship — the opponent — whose coach faces child pornography charges after police found a cache of erotic photos in his attic — or both, the Natick Red and Blue wanted no part of the post-match courtesies. They refused to shake hands with the victorious Scarlet Knights and hurried out of Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s Harrington Auditorium without speaking to reporters. Natick (19-1) would have left without its runner-up trophy, if not for an MIAA official who chased down straggling captain Nathan Ziegler and ushered him toward the hardware.
